“I didn’t plan on starting my career after college, but I see such a huge future with South Inc.”
Keely Chesnut has been an HR Recruiter here at South Inc. Nashville since September of 2018. In only two months, Chesnut has made a remarkable impact on this company and become a valued member of our team.
Keely Chesnut was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee, the city that herself and the company both call home. As a teen, Chesnut was outgoing and highly involved. Alongside her studies, Chesnut held membership in various clubs including HOSA, Beta Club, and Student Council. When she was not busy with study sessions or club meetings, you could find Chesnut competing in horse shows and practicing her sport. “My high school involvement definitely taught me the people skills I use now as a recruiter,” says Chesnut, “it’s all about talking to people and building relationships. I also got the opportunity to network and attend various conventions, which made a huge impact on my career today.”
Chesnut graduated from high school in 2014 and headed to the University of Tennessee to study Marketing. In addition to being a full-time student and member of the American Marketing Association, Chesnut spent her collegiate years working in the corporate world and gaining experience at a Mortgage company in downtown Knoxville. “It was a great experience, but I worked in a cubicle cold calling people all day,” says Chesnut, “it definitely helped me find what I want and need in a career.” Enter South Inc.
Chesnut graduated from the University of Tennessee in Summer 2018, and almost immediately walked through the doors of South Inc- an opportunity she found through ZipRecruiter. “I initially applied to the sales position,” says Chesnut, “But it wasn’t the right fit for me. A few days after that I had a dream that I was called in for an alternative position- and three days later I got a call offering me a recruiting position.” Sometimes, dreams become reality.
Chesnut officially started with the company in early September of this year and has already become an invaluable member of the team. As for her favorite aspect of the job? The ability to meet so many people and watch them grow within the company. “A few weeks back, we attended a team meeting,” says Chesnut, “Hannah asked the room ‘who is here because of Keeley’ and so many hands shot up. I didn’t realize that I had such an impact in only one month-it was amazing.” Chesnut appreciates her team just as much. In her first days at the company, the recruiter could tell that this was a special place. “These people are awesome,” says Chesnut, “Everyone is so welcoming, outgoing, and fun. We are all very family oriented, which means a lot to me. It hasn’t even been two months, and I already have made friends that feel like family.”
Much of Chesnut’s time is spent meeting new people and speaking with potential team members. Her number 1 selling point? The culture. “I always tell people about the family feeling that we have here,” says Chesnut, “I feel closer with these people that I met two months ago than people I spent four years of college with. I also stress the environment of encouragement-we all push each other every day, and I strive to do well and hit my goals for my team.” As for the other side of the interview desk, this recruiter knows what she’s looking for. “I need someone that is easy to talk to,” says Chesnut, “if you’re great with conversation, this is the job for you. Aside from that, the biggest thing I look for is a student mentality and someone who is ready to learn something new.”
As much as Keely Chesnut has added value to our team, she considers her own life improved by her time here. “I didn’t realize that my first real job after college would be something that I see such a huge future with,” says Chesnut, “I don’t know what I was expecting, but here everything is clear. I didn’t plan on starting my career after college, but I see such a huge future with South Inc.” What does that future entail? Chesnut’s goal is to keep moving up. “I hope to get to a point where I can be comfortable supporting a family and create a comfortable work-life balance. I know they can give that to me one day.”
